I have had a look at the plastic tank Acerbis will be releasing next year, for a whooping 429 Euro - that would be 20% of the bike's price here.
Given the very bad experience with a cut-and-rewelded metal tank (I tried with the Hima tank) that's not an option either.
I purchased two 5 liter Jerry cans (just for symmetry, I only need one to get to 16 liter) - but my welder and I could not find a solution for an attachment that would not look very ugly or was impractical for other reasons.
However, I filled up one Jerry can and rode it inside my panniers (the ones I make) to check if they leak, or even release smell and I am happy to announce that they are air and fume tight, even when rattling around in an otherwise empty pannier box.
So that's going to be my solution for Ladakh next year, one side box will have 5 extra liters and all the other heavy stuff goes in the box on the other side for balance.
